The Police Command in Enugu State says the South-East Security Summit being organised by Inspector-General of Police (IG-P), Mr Ibrahim Idris, will deepen community policing projects meant to check crime and criminality in the zone.
The command’s Spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Enugu that the summit would be “all-encompassing”.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the summit will bring together all traditional rulers; Presidents-General of communities and eminent personalities to discuss and proffer workable solutions to all forms of criminality bedevilling the zone.
“It will go a long way in strengthening the existing and pilot phases of various community policing projects already recording tremendous success in states within the zone,’’ Amaraizu said.
He said the summit would address issues of coordination among the royal fathers of the zone in terms of security.
“The summit will allow the custodians of our tradition, the royal fathers to find more creative means of partnering and synergising with the police to promote community policing tenets and principles in their domains.
“The command believes that the summit will tighten the bond of the people of the zone and the police for effective and efficient service delivery meant to stem crime,” the spokesman said.
He also said that the summit with the theme: “Community Policing: Rethinking National Security Framework for National Development”, would hold on July 5.
“It will be chaired by former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku; Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and all the State Governors in the zone would be the guests of honour.
“Guest Speakers at the occasion will be the Provost of Police Public Relations School, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu, and Prof. Auwal Umar, and the summit would hold at the Imo State Trade and Investment Centre, Owerri,” Amaraizu said.
NAN reports that over 1,000 traditional rulers and Presidents-General of communities in the zone had been scheduled to attend the summit.
The South-East is made up of five states: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo. (NAN)
