It was supposed to be a tough draw but defending champions Bayern Munich of Germany unexpectedly crumbled like a pack of cards in their Allianz Arena fortress, losing by a scandalous 0-4 to Real Madrid of Spain in the second leg semi-final of this year’s European Champions League.
Two goals apiece by Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo completely demystified the Pep Guardiola boys in front of their stunned home crowd.
Poor defending was mainly to blame, with the visitors, who labored to a lone goal victory in the first leg, romping into a three-goal lead before half time.
The goal harvest started as early as the 16th minute Sergio Ramos headed Luka Modric’s outswinging right corner that resulted from a swift counter attack past Manuel Neuer in goal for the hosts.
Ramos was to strike again four minutes later, heading home after Angel Di Maria’s free-kick was flicked to him by Pepe.
Ronaldo took over in 34 minutes, stabbing home a squared pass from Gareth Bale. Ronaldo put the icing on the cake on the dot of 90 minutes, finding the net from a close free kick despite a sea of Bayern legs that were supposed to have foiled him.
With that, Real Madrid did not only stylishly book a ticket to next month’s final in Lisbon, Portugal, but Ronaldo also grabbed the record for the most goals (16) scored in a Champions League campaign, breaking Lionel Messi’s goals record of 14 goals for a single Champions League.
This is Real Madrid’s first final in 12 years and they’ll face either Chelsea of England or fellow Spaniards Athletico Madrid.
