Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has commended the education policy of Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello of Niger State, describing the state’s revived policy on technical and vocational education as the best in the country.
The minister gave this commendation on Monday in his office in Abuja when he hosted Governor Sani-Bello and his education managers.
The Minister singled out the Governor’s efforts at improving teachers’ development programme, technical and vocational education in the state.
“As far as technical and vocational education is concerned, Niger state is the best. The steps you have taken to reposition this sector of education have placed you ahead other states. Mr. Governor, you have to keep it up. This is an area the Federal Ministry of Education is intending to collaborate with states,” he said.
The minister then disclosed that the Federal government intends to establish six new Specialised Universities of Technology in each of the zones to give boost to technical education.
He also said that one technical college would also be established in each of the 36 states of the federation. This he said will be in addition to Federal Government plan to have an average of ten technical and vocational institutions in each of the local government areas across the country and urged states to key into the programme.
The Minister also commended the teachers’ development programme of the State Government which gave room for teachers to undergo refreshers training to update them on global best teaching practices.
Earlier, Governor Sani-Bello had said his administration has been striving to revamp the educational sector of the state through provision of good infrastructure in schools and training of teachers.
He said that the State Government plans to establish teachers’ professional institute in the three senatorial districts, adding that one of such schools has since been established at Dandaudu in Munya Local Government Area.
The Governor said that two students per each of the 274 wards are presently undergoing training in the institution and were being provided with free accommodation and free feeding.
Sani-Bello, who commended the efforts of the minister in improving the standard of education in Nigeria, called for the support of the ministry on the teachers professional development institution.
