Nigerians celebrate Obama’s victory in decisive US Presidential Debate

It’s been a day of celebration for millions of Nigerians at home and abroad over the remarkable recovery of US President Barrack Obama in the country’s Presidential Debate.

Obama, of African descent and the first Black to rule the world’s most powerful nation, had unexpectedly lost the first round of the debate held in Denver, Colorado, on Oct. 3 but bounced back powerfully early this morning (Nigerian time) to humble Republican challenger Mitt Romney, thus raising hope of his re-election during the November 6 ballot.

Obama has been widely acknowledged as winner of today’s rematch in New York, with a CNN poll scoring it 46-39 in his favour. The debate touched on various issues, the key ones being job creations plans, energy, taxes, pensions, immigration, education, healthcare, national security and Libya.

Nigerians, many of whom kept vigil to watch the debate, have taken to social media to celebrate the victory of Obama (shown in photo), the Democratic Party flag bearer. Below are some of the comments made on Facebook by excited Nigerians:

Lara Wise: Romney is off course. Someone please show him where the steering wheel is.

Funmi Macaulay: This is the Obama that I have always known. Great performance Mr President. Romney rumbled tonight.

Chukwudi Nwokoye: President Obama won the debate decisively! It was a total beat-down, kind of ass-whipping of Mitt ‘Robme’.

Azuka Jebose: I don't know about u but Obama came to work tonite and got Romney lying back against d wall. Obama time. He is back. In d zone. Romney is rude, panicky, repetitive and without facts or records. Romneys only record is Stupid Olympics and “when I become President.”

Yinka Tella: Prez O won a Technical KO (Knock-Out) on the ever-slippery Governor! What a splendid performance by Mr. President. FOUR more years!

Jaiyeola Ajasa: FORWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!! FOUR MORE YEARS OF OBAMA!!!!!!!!!! FORWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John Okiyi Kalu: The winner of tonight’s debate will almost certainly become the next President of USA. Unless there is a major upheaval.

News Express however found that a few Nigerians who apparently prefer Governor Romney to Obama feel otherwise about the result of the debate. One of them, Ejikeme Alozie-Nwagboso, replied one of those celebrating Obama’s victory: “Too biased to even get out small time to tell us why he won the debate? More of a tie to me. Neutrality trumps bias. Both candidates had nice moments. Obama, clearly dodged the Libya security question. Romney missed going on attack too. Obama was focused and passionate, no doubt. Romney looked strong as well. Stop this bias stuff.”
