Enugu APC Chairman, Dr Ben Nwoye
The Peoples Democratic party(PDP) at the weekend suffered another blow as about 150 of its members, including a two-term commissioner and some of its chieftains in Aku in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Among the defectors were 50 women and former Commissioner for Health, Dr. Simon Idike, Onodagu Chibuike.
Speaking at the event which took place at Amagbo-Amgbowu Aku Ward 1, Igbo-Etiti LGA, and the immediate past Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Eugene Odo advised aspirants desiring to contest elections in the state to do so under the platform of the APC.
Saying that APC would neither be involved in the election rigging nor be rigged out, he said that anybody in Aku still in PDP should be regretting, stressing that the PDP-led government in the state had not done anything in two years in Igbo-Etiti council area, let alone in Aku that host 29 Professors out of the 36 the state has produced.
He described people in government now in the state as clueless leaders, while urging the members to go and prepare for the November 4 council election. “I assure you that anybody who wins the election on the platform of APC will be declared,” he said.
Odo charged those who joined the party to work with the existing members to ensure that the party unseats the PDP-led government in 2019.
In his remarks, Enugu State Chairman of APC, Dr. Ben Nwoye, who had earlier supervised the registration of the new members, urged people of the state to join "the winning team at the centre" in order to enjoy more dividends of democracy.
He boasted that with the influx of former PDP members into APC, the party would take over Enugu State in 2019.
Nwoye said that APC was party for the progressives and like minds, stressing that it was poised to rewrite the political history of the state and Nigeria at large.
Dr. Uche Olenyi, the leader of AYM and a member of APC state caucus, however implored members of the party in Aku to desist from abusing the state Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi or political appointees from the area, but to propagate APC ideology to the people.
Olenyi said ideology drives democracy and not the political bickering and antagonism practiced in Nigeria.
Highlight of the occasion was the commissioning of APC Igbo-Etiti West Constituency Zonal headquarters Aku office, donated by Anikwe Nnaemeka to the party.
