Africa Cup of Nations: We nearly spelled L-I-B-E-R-I-A

That’s right – the Super Eagles were simply in a ruthless mood. One . . . two . . . three . . . four . . . five . . . six goals, and the loud-mouthed Liberians could only score once! In the end, all that remained for the Nigerian senior national football team to spell Liberia was just one goal.

The rain started beating the visiting Lone Star rather too early at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar, capital of Cross River State, South-South Nigeria.

“Big Boss” Stephen Keshi’s boys had a job to do and were in a hurry to get done with it. Just 58 seconds after the whistle sounded to signal the beginning of hostilities, Efe Ambrose had found the net after heading home Victor Moses’ free kick. Pacy striker Ahmed Musa made it two on 38 minutes after tapping home Emmanuel Emenike’s low cross.

Any hope of recovery in the second half by the Liberians fizzled out immediately on the restart, as Moses blasted home after a weak clearance by the Liberians in the very first minute. Then John Obi Mikel converted a penalty five minutes later after a rampaging Nosa Igiebor had been hacked down in the Liberians’ vital area. Four minutes after substitute Ike Uche put his name on the scorers’ sheet, slipping the ball underneath goalie Sherman after a pass from Musa on the edge of the box. Then Moses completed the rout with his second goal in the 87th minute. The Liberians’ consolation goal came minutes earlier via Patrick Wleh, who slotted the ball past goalie Vincent Enyeama.

There couldn’t have been a better way for the Super Eagles to book a ticket to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa after the 2-2 first leg draw in Liberia on September 8.
