The Senate during plenary
The Nigerian Senate has boasted of its achievement over a period of two years, saying it passed 96 bills and 72 petitions, the highest ever in the history of the National Assembly.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Friday, disclosed this during his valedictory speech to mark the two years anniversary of the 8th Senate.
He noted that the Senate committed itselfto greater openness and accountability, adding: “We have led from the frontline on the war against corruption, having passed several corruption-exposing resolutions that have saved the government billions of naira cumulatively.”
Saraki also explained thatthe National Assembly has opened its line-by-line item budget to the world, a first in the history of the National Assembly.
Saraki who thanked all his colleagues for their zeal and doggedness assured that the Senate will continue to sustain its current feat in ensuring that Nigeria is taken out of recession.
All other lawmakers who spoke during the valedictory session hailed the outstanding leadership of the Senate President for bringing about a bipartisan Senate devoid of ethnic, religious and sectional sentiments.
Senator George Sekibo, who also spoke during the special session, used the occasion to call on the APC administration to desist from harassing political opponents perceived to be speaking against the government, adding that the PDP lawmakers in the Senate have been very supportive to the current administration.
In his valedictory contribution, Senator Dino Melaye urged that the rule of law must prevail and not allow for selective application of law.
The valedictory session was attended by national leadership of both the APC and PDP, serving ministers, former presiding officers and members of the diplomatic community.
