The Nigerian Senate has mandated its committee on environment to investigate the Ogoni cleanup programme and report back to it for further legislative intervention.

This was part of resolutions approved by the Senate following a motion on world Environment day sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu who raised concerns that in spite of the recent launch of Ogoni clean-up ‎campaign, it does not appear that work has commenced.

Senator Tinubu, while moving the motion noted that there is a need to be proactive in addressing Nigeria environmental issues which have widespread effects on the economy, health, and social wellbeing of the people.

The Senate on its part resolved to call on governments at all levels to create a feasible framework for realisation of the protection of the environment under the Sustainable Development Goals and urged the ministry of environment to create awareness on environmental issues with a view to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of the citizenry.

The Senate also expressed worries over the implementation of the Paris Agreement in the light of the recently announced withdrawal of the United States of America which has drawn criticisms from leaders across the world.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki in his remarks charged Nigeria on the need to take up a leading position in combating climate change across Africa.

The Ministry of Environment and relevant agencies were mandated by the lawmakers to create a sustainable framework to counter climate change and its effects.
