Senate President Bukola Saraki
The Nigerian Senate has giventhe Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and other revenue generating agencies to stop further capital expenditure until they comply with the Fiscal Responsibility Act.
It said that the agencies had violated the Act and gave them twoweeks to submit their budgets in accordance with the provisions of Section 21 of the law.
The directive was sequel to a motion on “Non-submission of 2017 Budget by Public Corporations in Violation of the Fiscal Responsibility Act” moved by the Deputy Senate Leader, Bala Na’Allah, at Wednesday’s plenary.
The lawmakers gave the 31 affected parastatals two weeks to submit their budget proposals to the National Assembly in accordance with provision of section 21 of the Fiscal Responsibility Act.
Senator Na’Allah had decried the non-compliance with Section 21 of the Fiscal Responsibility Act by government agencies.
He observed that non-compliance to the Fiscal Responsibility Act constitutes abuse of power and economic sabotage aimed at frustrating the current economic measures to address the economic recession.
Other lawmakers in their submissions raised concerns that the Fiscal Responsibility Commission is failing in its responsibility through complacency in the execution of its mandate.
The President of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, ruled on the motion, and decried the non-compliance with Section 21 of the Fiscal Responsibility Act by government agencies.
