Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) has rejected calls by the people of Imo State to make town unions fourth tiers of government in Nigeria and asked all those championing it to have a rethink.
Addressing Journalists yesterday in Awka, the group through its National President, Dr. Jude A.P. Okolo, called on those who are championing the cause to have a rethink.
He described the effort as an exercise in futility especially in Igbo land where republican way of life is the order of the day.
Okolo said: “People would always want to decide who leads them. The ugly experience of events in the local government in all parts of the country is enough food for thought. The independence of town unions should be held sacrosanct.”
Continuing, the ASATU National Vice Chairman flanked by the President General, Olumbanasa, Anambra West council area, Nnachu Lawrence, and National Publicity Secretary, Barr. Stan Nwattah, appealed for huge investment in the power sector for improved economy saying that without energy, the economy will remain comatose.
ASATU further said: “There is need for the government and organised private sector to invest in power generation to ensure steady power supply. This, no doubt, will serve as a catalyst that will cascade industrialisation of the state.
“There is the urgent need for Anambra people, especially Igbo people to think home; return and invest at home in order to grow their domestic economies.”
Okolo appealed to Ndigbo to invest at home to improve the local economy.
They called on well meaning and illustrious Anambra State citizens to help empower their less-privileged ones adding that in so doing, they would be helping to re-distribute wealth and further curb criminality in the communities.
“ASATU is in support of the rotation of the office of Governor among the three Senatorial Zones, This engenders the spirit of oneness, equity and fair play.
This was the message of our recent Town Hall meetings.
“ASATU is deeply worried over the burden imposed on the people by the current economic hardship and we call on the Federal Government to find ways of ameliorating the difficulties. Prices of food items have hit the roof-tops and most parents cannot afford a meal in a day, nor pay school fees for their children. Federal Government should assemble a team of knowledgeable Nigerians to help guide the country out of this economic quick sand,” the group stated.
