The Ogun State Police Command says it has arrested a couple for allegedly engaging in armed robbery and serving as receivers of stolen items.
The suspect, Mr and Mrs Mathew and Precious Abioro, were nabbed by men of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) following a tip-off.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta, said the robbery gang had planned to carry out an operation before they were arrested by the police
Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the couple had confessed to the crime.
He disclosed that a pump action gun, one cut-to-size single barrel pistol, one cut-to-size double barrel pistol and four live cartridges were recovered from the suspects.
According to Oyeyemi, “The couple were arrested when men of FSARS received information that some notorious armed robbers who have been terrorizing Abeokuta and Sango axis are planning to carry out another operation, unfortunately their hideout was stormed and the couple were arrested.
“On interrogation, they confessed being involved in series of armed robbery within and outside Abeokuta metropolis.
“They equally confessed being receivers of stolen motorcycles from other robbery gangs and that they used to sell such motorcycles to Benin Republic and used the proceeds to purchase arms and ammunition which they use for their own operations.”
Oyeyemi said the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, had commended men of FSARS for being proactive in the fight against crime.
He quoted the commissioner as warning hoodlums to stay clear off the state “because the command is all out to deal decisively with anybody who has the intention of perpetrating any form of crime in the state no matter how highly placed the person may be.”
