U-17 World Cup: Golden Eaglets crush Uruguay; set for rematch with Sweden in semis

Taiwo Awoniyi scored twice for Nigeria to beat Uruguay this evening and set up an Under-17 World Cup semi-final rematch against Sweden on Tuesday.

Nigeria had to come back thrice against Sweden to draw 3-3 with Sweden in a Group F clash.

The Golden Eaglets are also on course to achieving a record fourth U-17 World Cup title.

Awoniyi, in for the injured Isaac Success, scored in the 18th and then in the 79th minutes with superb assists from Kelechi Iheanacho.

Uruguay, whose full international as well as U-20 teams had earlier this year recorded wins over Nigeria, took the game to the Golden Eaglets from the blast of the first whistle.

However, their finishing was not clinical and that allowed Nigeria to settle into the game and on 18 minutes, Awoniyo helped on a superb through ball from Iheanacho for the opening goal.

The South Americans, who were beaten finalists two years ago in Mexico, fought hard for an equaliser but they found the Eaglets defence uncompromising with goalkeeper Dele Alampasu at his best.

Uruguay seemed to have pegged back Nigeria after the interval as they continued to probe for a goal to restore parity.

Awoniyi would then deliver the killer punch in the 79th minute when he again slotted home after piece of great work by Iheanacho, who wiggled his way through the Uruguay defence before he located the hard working Awoniyi.
