…Questions credibility of MPS ratings
A cross section of Nigerians has commended Voice of the People (VOP)90.3 FM Lagos, for hitting 31 million watch hours and having over 100,000 subscribers, records never achieved by any other radio station in Nigeria.
According to them, the exceptional listenership and viewership record underscores the station's deep connection with its audience and its capacity to engage millions of people in meaningful, real-time conversations regarding national development.
They said that the station which was co-founded by courageous and fearless journalist, Rufai Oseni was established with a vision to grant a voice to the ordinary citizen, has rapidly transitioned from a traditional terrestrial frequency to a global digital powerhouse.
However, they questioned the credibility of Media Planning Services (MPS), which put the radio station which has no doubt become the most listened-to radio station in Lagos in particular and Nigeria in general at No 22.
According to them, how can a radio station which has achieved in a short time, records which no other radio station that started years before it has achieved be put at that number?
Contributing, Timothy Adelaja said, unlike the other radio stations that focus primarily on entertainment rotations, VOP90. has built a reputation on courageously dissecting political, social, and economic programs that impact on the life of average Nigerians.
He said that the 31 million watch hours and over 100,000 subscribers reflect a collective thirst for transparent, uncompromising information, which has solidified the station’s position as a trustworthy defender of civic awareness.
According to him, Nigerians don’t need MPS to know the radio station that is telling them the truth about what is going on in government and in the country.
He added that what VOP90.3 FM has achieved within four years of its establishment in terms of watch hour and subscriber base, no other radio station has gone close to that.
Also contributing, Sunny Essiet said that reaching 31 million watch hours cements VOP 90.3 FM as a dominant force in contemporary African media.
According to him, industry analysts and listeners alike view this milestone not just as a victory for the station, but as a testament to the power of citizen-centric media, adding that VOP 90.3 gives Nigerians news behind the news.
He said that VOP's record-breaking engagement has set a progressive standard for how modern broadcasting can empower individuals, hold leadership accountable, and unite an entire nation.
Furthermore, he said that central to this achievement is the station's highly inclusive, multilingual programming, which bridges the gap between diverse socio-economic classes.
According to him, by delivering popular segments like its distinct newspaper reviews in English, Yoruba, and Igbo, VOP ensures that vital national updates are accessible to everyone.
“This inclusive strategy has cultivated deep audience loyalty, turning everyday listeners into active participants who frequently call in to voice their perspectives on critical national matters. The slogan: "now you have a voice," is also captivating, Essiet said.
Chukwuma Okeke,a tricycle operator said that VOP 90.3 FM is a radio station for the masses.
According to him, Nigerians need a radio station that would be telling truth to power and that is what the radio station is doing.
He said that the radio frequency is always on in his tricycle from morning till night and that most of his passengers enjoy the station too.
In his own contribution, Ukwuoma Chibuoke, a vulcanizer said that VOP is the radio station for the masses, adding that Nigerians have already rated it highly.
He said that the newspaper reviews in Igbo, English and Yoruba languages has made people who did not go to school to know what is happening in the country.
According to him, that has endeared the station to a lot of ordinary people.
Also contributing Ayo Folarin, an unemployed graduate commended the quality of analysis in the radio station.
He said that the station gathered a lot of analysts who have depth in a lot of topical issues.
According to him, that is the reason why he always tune in to learn new things.
A trader, Chike Ukatu said that his day is not complete without listening to VOP, especially the Oge- Ndigbo (Igbo program)
According to him, the banter between the two presenters is always interesting.
Speaking further, he said that at Ladipo market, they usually use the radio programs to cheer themselves up while waiting for customers to come.
