The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has commended the Ladipo Market Union for helping to secure the arrest of three persons caught allegedly dumping refuse indiscriminately at Ladipo Junction, inward Airport Road, as it renewed its warning against illegal waste disposal across the state.
Speaking on the development yesterday, LAWMA’s Executive Director (Finance), Kunle Adebiyi, said the suspects were apprehended on Thursday, October 29, 2026, following the market union’s intervention and were subsequently handed over to the agency’s Task Force Office in Oshodi for further action in line with existing environmental laws.
Adebiyi described the union’s action as a demonstration of community responsibility and effective stakeholder collaboration, stressing that keeping Lagos clean required the collective efforts of market associations, residents, businesses and community leaders.
He said the arrest sent a strong message that indiscriminate waste disposal would not be tolerated, noting that such practices deface public spaces, obstruct drainage channels, degrade the environment and pose serious public health risks.
The LAWMA official urged traders and other residents to use approved waste collection services and dispose of refuse only through authorised channels rather than on roads, medians and other public spaces.
He reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to working with market unions and other stakeholders across Lagos to strengthen environmental compliance and promote a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable city. (Guardian)
