Following the death of a post-basic psychiatric nursing student, identified as Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo, the management of the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, has announced the indefinite suspension of all academic activities.
The development was contained in a notification letter dated 20 October and signed by Dr Taiwo Omirin, Coordinator of Programmes and Head of School, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director of the hospital.
The affected students include those in the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic sets, master’s student nurses and those undergoing orientation.
They were directed to vacate their hostels with immediate effect.
“This decision follows the unfortunate demise of Student Nurse Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo, which has reportedly resulted in student unrest within the hospital community,” the letter stated.
The hospital said the suspension was intended to provide a peaceful and conducive environment for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
It urged affected students and other stakeholders to remain calm and comply strictly with the directive pending further communication, while expressing regret over any inconvenience caused.
The deceased was reportedly asthmatic and died at the institution under controversial circumstances, sparking protests among fellow students who alleged negligence in the handling of his medical emergency.
His death has generated outrage and calls for an investigation into the healthcare response system at the institution.
An eyewitness also alleged that Taiwo’s death was the second such incident this year, raising concerns among his colleagues and fellow students. (Nigerian Tribune)
