Afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti and Fuji artiste, Abass Obesere, thrilled music lovers with electrifying performances at Felabration on Thursday night, celebrating Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s posthumous birthday.
The event which took place at the New Afrika Shine, Ikeja with the theme “Who Are You”, finished in the early hours of Friday morning.
The performance formed part of the activities celebrating Fela, who was born on Oct. 15, 1938, and has remained influential in African music and sociopolitical commentary.
Femi Kuti, Fela’s eldest son, entertained the audience with Afrobeat sounds that reflected the musical tradition established by his father, while Obesere brought Fuji music to the celebration.
Also, there was a joint performance by the two artistes as they collaborated on the stage by fusing Afrobeat and Fuji to the delight of the crowd.
Mr Real and Lyte also performed their hit songs to the crowd and the performances added to the atmosphere at the annual festival, which brings together music enthusiasts to honour Fela’s contribution to Nigerian music, culture and activism.
Some fun seekers expressed excitement over the performances, describing the combination of Afrobeat and Fuji music as an enjoyable way to celebrate Fela’s legacy.
One attendee, Adebayo Oladimeji, said Femi Kuti’s performance offered a reminder of the enduring influence of his father’s music.
“Watching Femi perform was a special experience because he continues to carry his father’s musical legacy forward.
“It was a fitting tribute to Fela and I look forward to other performances and the grand finale.” Oladimeji said.
Chiamaka Nwosu, another member of the audience, said Obesere’s performance brought a different musical flavour to the celebration.
“I enjoyed Obesere’s performance because Fuji music added another dimension to the event as you can see how the dance floor scattered.
“It was exciting to see different musical styles come together to celebrate Fela,” she said.
Tunde Adebayo said the event provided an opportunity for younger audiences to appreciate Fela’s contribution to Nigerian music and society.
“The celebration is entertaining, but it also reminded us of Fela’s impact on music and his courage in speaking about issues affecting society.
His legacy deserves to be celebrated, not just in this moment but for life,” he said.
