Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, has been named a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Perry World House, the University of Pennsylvania’s hub for global affairs, for the 2026–2027 academic year.
The appointment is part of Perry World House’s 10th-anniversary cohort, which brings together policy practitioners, diplomats and international thinkers to connect academic research with policymaking.
Gambari’s selection follows his appointment earlier in 2026 as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the university’s Center for Africana Studies.
As a fellow, he will participate in faculty meetings, classroom lectures, conferences, workshops and public programmes, drawing on his experience in African affairs, conflict resolution, peacekeeping and international governance.
Other members of the 2026–2027 cohort include former Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla Miranda, Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Médecins Sans Frontières chief executive Tirana Hassan and former United States Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth.
Gambari’s career spans academia, national government and multilateral diplomacy. He has served as director-general of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Minister of External Affairs and chief of staff to the Nigerian president.
His international appointments include United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa, Joint African Union-United Nations Special Representative for Darfur and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq.
According to the university, Distinguished Visiting Fellows engage directly with its community through workshops, guest lectures, meetings with researchers, public events and policy dialogues.
“The Distinguished Visiting Fellows Program is a key way we achieve one of our most important primary institutional goals, which is connecting the academic research being done at Penn with the global policymaking community,” Perry World House Faculty Director Michael C. Horowitz said.
The institution’s Executive Director, Marie Harf, said the programme fostered valuable exchanges between visiting practitioners and the university community.
“We are delighted to host an esteemed group of visitors over the course of the academic year… Our visitors are part of what makes Perry World House such a unique and invaluable institution,” she said.
Gambari is expected to contribute to discussions on global governance, human rights and international security, sharing insights from his diplomatic career with students and faculty.
Born in Ilorin, Kwara State, in 1944, Gambari served as Nigeria’s Minister of External Affairs from 1984 to 1985 under General Muhammadu Buhari.
He later became Nigeria’s longest-serving Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, holding the position from 1990 to 1999 under five successive heads of state.
During that period, he chaired the United Nations Special Committee Against Apartheid from 1990 to 1994 and the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations.
He served as Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Africa from 1999 to 2005, contributing to the development of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development.
Gambari subsequently headed the United Nations Department of Political Affairs from 2005 to 2007 and served as a special envoy on issues involving Myanmar, Cyprus and Zimbabwe.
From 2010 to 2012, he led the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur as Joint Special Representative. It was then the world’s largest peacekeeping mission.
He is the founder and chairman of the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development in Abuja. (Tribune)
