LASEMA at the scene of the accident
A Land Rover Jeep caught fire after overturning on the Third Mainland Bridge inward to Iyana-Oworo, Lagos, following an alleged loss of steering control.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said no one lost their life in the incident, which caused severe traffic congestion along the busy corridor.
The agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said in a statement that LASEMA received a distress call at about 1:06pm, prompting it to deploy its Tiger Squad from the Command-and-Control Centre in Alausa.
He said the response team arrived at the scene at about 1:30 pm and found the vehicle, with registration number EPE-743JM, engulfed in flames.
According to him, responders immediately began firefighting operations, contained the blaze within the vehicle, and prevented it from spreading to the surrounding area.
He said the operation was carried out in collaboration with the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police Force.
The agencies implemented traffic management measures to protect other road users and prevent secondary incidents.
The agency later evacuated the burnt vehicle from the carriageway with the support of a private Hiab truck, allowing traffic to flow freely along the affected corridor.
The agency urged motorists to keep their vehicles in good condition, drive cautiously and comply with road safety regulations. (The Nation)
