Former Barcelona and Chelsea winger Pedro announced his retirement from professional football Wednesday at age 39, ending a career spanning more than two decades.
"I feel like it's time, time to step forward and start a new chapter in my life," Pedro wrote on US social media platform Instagram.
"I am proud of myself for living my dream and for all the people who were by my side to make it a reality. Thank you, football, for making me so happy."
Pedro joined Barcelona's La Masia academy in 2004 before establishing himself in the first team and becoming part of one of the most successful periods in the Spanish club's history.
He won three UEFA Champions League titles with Barcelona in 2009, 2011 and 2015, and scored the opening goal in their 3-1 victory over Manchester United in the 2011 final.
Pedro spent seven seasons with Barcelona's first team before joining Chelsea in 2015.
During five seasons in England, he helped Chelsea win the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Europa League.
He moved to Italy after leaving Chelsea in 2020, playing for Roma before joining their city rivals Lazio in 2021.
Pedro left Lazio after the 2025-26 season, having finished as the club's joint-leading scorer with five goals across all competitions.
At international level, Pedro earned 65 caps and scored 17 goals for Spain, helping his country win the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012. (AA)
