Interim head coach of Super Falcons, Augustine Eguavoen
By IJEOMA OKIGBO
Augustine Eguavoen, interim head coach of the Super Falcons, says withdrawals from the team will not affect Nigeria’s chances against Comoros in the 2028 Olympics qualifiers.
Eguavoen said this ahead of Friday’s first-leg encounter against Comoros at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne-Remo.
Nigeria will host both legs of the second-round fixture on Friday and Oct. 13, with Comoros unable to provide a standard football pitch for the matches.
The coach acknowledged the withdrawals of Asisat Oshoala, Ashley Plumptre and Oluwatosin Demehin but expressed confidence in their replacements.
“It is true that we have a number of withdrawals.
“However, I have confidence in their replacements as these ones also have the quality and experience to contribute meaningfully to the team’s success against Comoros.
“Everyone has settled in well in camp as we have a full house now, and our focus is to present a strong and competitive squad for the two matches,” he said.
Belarus-based forward Blessing Okpe, a late invitee, is the only player still expected to join the team in camp in Ijebu-Ode.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade will lead the Falcons as they begin their bid for a second consecutive appearance at the Women’s football tournament of the Olympics.
Nigeria participated in the women’s football event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
