No fewer than 134 Nigerians are facing deportation from the United States over various alleged offences, according to official records.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) identified the individuals, while the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) included them in its “Worst of the Worst” register.
The latest update to the register in August added 10 names, bringing the total to 134, after 124 names were published in July.
The register lists individuals arrested by ICE and the specific offences associated with their cases.
An analysis of the records shows that financial crimes account for the largest category. Fraud, including wire and mail fraud, appears in 59 records, followed by money laundering with 17.
Identity theft, theft or larceny, and sexual offences each appear in 16 records.
Violent offences, including assault, account for 24 records, while drug-related crimes appear in 10. Conspiracy is listed In seven records, while immigration offences, including illegal re-entry and alien smuggling, account for six.
Other offences, including weapons violations, computer crimes, driving under the influence (DUI) and forgery, appear across 18 records.
U.S. authorities noted that the figures reflect offences listed at the time of arrest and do not represent final convictions. They also cautioned that the 134 entries do not represent 134 single-offence cases, as some individuals face multiple charges.
For instance, Temitope Bashua is listed for wire fraud, identity theft and general fraud, while Chukwuemeka Okorocha faces charges of wire fraud, drug possession, illegal firearm possession and aggravated assault.
Chukwuemeka Chinye is listed for bank fraud, larceny, identity theft and conspiracy.
The July and August DHS updates did not specify exact dates for the deportation proceedings. (The Nation)
