The kingmakers of Ise Land in the Lekki Local Council Development Area of Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, have withdrawn their earlier consensus support for the candidacy of Prince Ibrahim Adebowale Saliu against Prince Wasiu Gbadebo Adenupebi Adegoroye who is the chosen one for the stool of the Onise of Ise Land.
The decision followed consultations and further consideration of developments surrounding the succession process, with the kingmakers citing the need to uphold justice, fairness, peace and the integrity of the traditional institution.
In a statement issued by the kingmakers, they said their earlier position supporting Saliu had been withdrawn unanimously in the interest of the kingdom.
The development comes amid a dispute over the recent installation of Saliu as the Onise of Ise, which the Adegoroye Ruling House had protested, alleging that the exercise contravened a subsisting order of the Lagos State High Court, Epe Judicial Division.
The kingmakers said among the issues subsequently brought to their attention were concerns over Saliu’s alleged involvement in another traditional stool process with picture evidence.
According to them, the matter should be fully clarified by the appropriate authorities before his candidacy for the Onise stool could receive further consideration.
They stressed that the withdrawal was intended to protect the sanctity of the traditional institution and promote peace within Ise Land.
The controversy is also before the Lagos State High Court, Epe Judicial Division, where an order restraining the Lagos State Government, its agencies and officials from recognising or installing Saliu or any other candidate for the stool is said to be subsisting pending the determination of the suit.
The matter has been adjourned until October 29, 2026, for further proceedings.
The latest position by the kingmakers is expected to add a new dimension to the ongoing succession crisis, as stakeholders await the court’s determination and clarification of the rightful occupant of the Onise of Ise stool. (The Nation)
