Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to step aside from the 2027 presidential race and support the party’s candidate, Peter Obi.
The call was made by the NDC Director of New Media and Strategic Communications, Theo Abu Agada, in a post via his X handle on Thursday.
Agada argued that Atiku’s withdrawal from the race and support for Obi would strengthen the opposition’s chances of defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
The NDC spokesperson said stepping aside would not diminish Atiku’s political legacy, but could instead contribute to the emergence of a stronger opposition coalition.
While acknowledging Atiku’s political record and vision for Nigeria, Agada said the former vice-president should consider stepping away from the presidential contest in the broader interest of the opposition.
He wrote: “Every electioneering season. AA is a good and solid man, but he needs to give it up at this point.
“His idea for a working Nigeria is brilliant, but at this point, he needs to give up his ambition.
“If he steps aside, nothing is going to affect his sterling legacy. AA should support Obi to kick the APC out.”
The development comes shortly after Atiku declared that the 2027 presidential election would be the last election he would contest, regardless of the outcome. (Tribune)
