Two people were injured on Saturday when a 20-foot containerized truck overturned after being hit by a flat-body truck at New Garage, along Ikorodu Road, inward Maryland, Lagos.

The containerized truck, with registration number SUL 460 ZY, had three occupants when the accident occurred.

According to a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the containerised truck was struck by the flat-body truck whose driver allegedly drove recklessly and fled the scene before emergency responders arrived.

The impact caused the containerised truck to overturn, obstructing about 50 per cent of the carriageway. It also struck a high-tension electricity pole, bringing down power lines across the road and creating an additional hazard for motorists, pedestrians and emergency workers.

Two occupants sustained injuries. The driver’s assistant suffered serious head and chest injuries and multiple bruises, while the driver sustained injuries to his mouth and shoulder.

The Lagos State Government, through LASEMA and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), provided first aid and advanced medical attention to the victims at the scene before stabilising them for further care.

Responders at the scene included LASEMA, LASAMBUS, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and Ikeja Electric.

Ikeja Electric isolated the power supply to the affected section to neutralise the electrical hazard posed by the fallen pole and live wires.

LASTMA officers managed traffic and secured the corridor to minimise congestion, while a private tow truck was engaged to evacuate the overturned vehicle and clear the obstruction.

As of the time of filing this report, recovery and clearance operations were ongoing to restore vehicular movement along the affected section.

The state government urged commercial drivers to desist from reckless driving and comply with traffic regulations.

It said efforts were underway to identify the fleeing driver of the flat-body truck for prosecution in line with the Lagos State Traffic Law.

Residents were also advised to avoid the area where possible and cooperate with LASTMA officials managing traffic diversions during the clearance operation. (The Nation)
