Femi Fani-Kayode
Nigerians in South Africa have welcomed the appointment of Femi Fani-Kayode as the country’s Ambassador.
The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), the apex body representing Nigerians residing in South Africa, in a statement signed by its President, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, expressed hope that Fani-Kayode will draw on his wealth of experience to address the challenges facing Nigerians living in South Africa.
Fani-Kayode is assuming office at a critical time, when the relationship between both countries seems to be at its lowest ebb.
NICASA therefore said Fani-Kayode possesses what it takes to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and South Africa and to enhance the protection and representation of Nigerian citizens.
The statement read, “On behalf of our National Executive Council, affiliate structures, and the broader Nigerian community across all provinces of South Africa, we celebrate this significant appointment and express our anticipation for your earliest resumption to office.
“We are confident that your wealth of knowledge, vast political experience, diplomatic exposure, and deep understanding of national and international affairs will greatly advance the interests, welfare, and aspirations of Nigerians living in South Africa.
“Your appointment comes at a critical period when strong, proactive, and compassionate leadership is needed to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and South Africa and to enhance the protection and representation of Nigerian citizens.
“NICASA also acknowledges with appreciation the commendable efforts and dedication of the Consul General – Amb. (Mrs) Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, of Nigeria in Johannesburg, whose ongoing work in engaging and supporting the Nigerian community has been encouraging. “We firmly believe that the synergy between your esteemed office and the Consulate will further consolidate the progress already being made and open new opportunities for effective community engagement, consular support, and diplomatic intervention where necessary.
“As the recognised apex body of Nigerians in South Africa, NICASA eagerly looks forward to welcoming you to our country of residence and to working closely with your good office to promote unity, peace, security, development, and the overall well-being of Nigerians across South Africa.”
“At a time when our community faces social, economic, and security challenges, including growing concerns affecting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, we believe your leadership will provide renewed hope, strategic direction, and stronger institutional collaboration. We are particularly eager to partner with your office to navigate these troubling times and to chart a path towards greater heights for the Nigerian community.”
The group also assured Fani-Kayode of its support and “readiness to engage constructively with your good office in all matters that will uplift the image of Nigeria, protect the dignity of our people, and foster harmonious coexistence within South African society.” (The Nation)
