Two people have died after heavy rainfall triggered flooding in parts of Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday.

The victims were identified as Isa Haruna, 38, a security personnel popularly known as Mallam Matari, and 18-year-old Abba Kyari, who reportedly drowned in the Pompomari area.

According to the agency, the flood occurred in Malari, Pompomari and surrounding communities following an early morning downpour on Monday.

SEMA said its search and rescue team, in collaboration with the Yobe State Fire Service, responded promptly after receiving distress calls but found the victims already dead.

The agency said the bodies were evacuated to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu.

SEMA urged residents, particularly those living in flood-prone communities, to exercise caution during heavy rainfall.

It advised members of the public to avoid walking, playing or driving through flooded roads, drainage channels and waterways.

The agency also urged parents and guardians to keep children away from rivers, streams, culverts and floodwaters, noting that schools are currently on vacation. (Daily Trust)
