The Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Most Reverend Felix Ajakaiye, has cautioned kingmakers and stakeholders in Ilawe-Ekiti against manipulating the process of selecting the next Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, but to allow merit, integrity and competence to guide the emergence.

The bishop gave the advice during a thanksgiving Mass at St. John Pro-Cathedral, Ilawe-Ekiti, in honour of the Alawe, Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi, Afuntade I, who reigned from 2011 to 2026.

The event attracted dignitaries, including former Ekiti State governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; his wife, Bisi; deputy governor Monisade Afuye; Senator Yemi Adaramodu; human rights lawyer, Femi Falanaq; Senator Biodun Olujimi; and other traditional and religious leaders.

In his homily, Bishop Ajakaiye urged the people of Ilawe-Ekiti to preserve the late monarch’s legacy of peace, unity and selfless service, describing his life and reign as worthy of celebration.

He warned that division and undue influence during the selection process could affect the future of the community.

“There are people already preparing for the throne, but not all have the capacity or the will to serve. Let merit prevail. Do not cut corners. God is watching. We want the best successor, one who will even surpass the achievements of the late Alawe,” the cleric said.

Former Governor Fayemi described Oba Alabi as a wise and impactful monarch whose counsel was invaluable to him and the people of Ekiti.

He likened the late Alawe to Plato’s philosopher-kings, saying he governed with wisdom, courage and deep knowledge.

Senator Olujimi described the late monarch as a compassionate, humble and accessible ruler, who remained committed to the welfare of his subjects.

The Regent of Ilawe-Ekiti, Princess Fadekemi Alabi, said her father was a disciplined, hardworking and visionary leader, whose impact extended beyond the community.

The media adviser to the late monarch, Chief Ajibade Olubunmi, described Oba Alabi as the architect of modern Ilawe-Ekiti, highlighting his contributions to road development, communal harmony, the establishment of a Federal College of Education and efforts towards securing a Nigerian Law School campus for the town.
