Governor Ademola Adeleke Campaign Council, also known as the Imole Campaign Council, on Monday petitioned the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), calling for an independent review of what it described as concerns over security and the protection of fundamental rights ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Speaking after submitting the petition in Abuja, the spokesperson of the campaign council, Barrister Pelumi Olajengbesi, urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to reassure residents of Osun State that the election would be conducted in a peaceful, free and credible atmosphere.

Olajengbesi said the petition was prompted by what the campaign council believes are incidents of arrests and detentions involving some of its members, as well as concerns over the overall security situation in the state.

He said the council was seeking the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission to ensure that all security agencies operate within the law and protect the rights of all citizens throughout the electoral process.

According to him, the campaign council is also requesting that the police provide greater transparency regarding the arrest and detention of some of its supporters, including one of its members, Hon Popoola Alabama.

Olajengbesi maintained that the council had sought clarification on the circumstances surrounding the arrest and called on the police to either file appropriate charges where necessary or release those being held in accordance with the law.

He further appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to reassure the people of Osun State of the neutrality of the Nigeria Police Force and its readiness to provide adequate security before, during and after the election.

The campaign spokesperson also expressed concern over reports of violence in parts of the state, urging security agencies to thoroughly investigate all incidents and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

He said the council had raised these issues before the National Human Rights Commission with the expectation that the commission would examine the complaints and take appropriate action within its mandate.

Olajengbesi also called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure that federal institutions continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities impartially during the election period.

He expressed confidence that the forthcoming governorship election would reflect the will of the people of Osun State, while urging voters to remain peaceful and participate in the democratic process. (Nigerian Tribune)
