A 14-day ultimatum has been issued to Qatar Airways to recover and return a passenger’s missing luggage or pay N11.812 million as compensation for its alleged contents.

The ultimatum was Issued by a Lagos-based law firm, Brown & Cooper Solicitors, through a letter dated July 25, 2026, and written on behalf of the passenger, Mr Peter Omopariola Fowoyo, who alleged that one of his three checked bags went missing after flying from Doha, Qatar, to Lagos on Qatar Airways Flight QR1407 on June 27, 2026.

In the letter as written by the law firm, Fowoyo checked in three bags with tag numbers 0157264140, 0157264141 and 0157264142 at Doha International Airport before boarding the flight.

It stated further that upon arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, the passenger was able to recover only two of the three bags after waiting for several hours at the baggage carousel.

The passenger was said to have immediately reported the incident to officials of the Nigeria Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO) at the airport, where he filled a Baggage Irregularity Report, and was reportedly assured that efforts would be made to trace and recover the missing bag.

But the law firm alleged that weeks after the report, the luggage is yet to be found. It claimed that the missing medium-sized black briefcase contained valuables worth N11,812,000.

The items listed include $3,000 cash, two gold wristwatches, medication, 15 pairs of new trousers, a pair of new blue Nike canvas shoes, a pair of new black shoes, a blue Adidas canvas shoe, two packs of new singlets, 10 pairs of new socks, a vegetable cutter, two packets of biscuits and a packet of cashew nuts.

The law firm equally claimed that receipts for the items were inside the missing luggage, making it impossible for their client to provide documentary proof of purchase.

As a result, the law firm made a demand that Qatar Airways either recover and return the luggage in good condition or pay the sum of N11,812,000 as the value of the missing contents within 14 days of receipt of the letter.

It further warned that failure to comply would leave their client with no option but to institute legal proceedings against the airline without further notice.

As of the time of filing this report, Qatar Airways has not issued any public statement regarding the allegation or the compensation demand. (Nigerian Tribune)
