The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced that it will not reopen its student portal for the 2025\2026 Second Semester course registration.

The institution cited the need to uphold academic regulations ahead of examinations scheduled to begin on Friday, August 7, 2026.

The decision was communicated in a statement released on Saturday by the Head of the UNILAG Communication Unit, Mrs. Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem.

The statement sought to clarify the registration process and address concerns regarding alleged inadequate opportunities for students to register.

According to the university management, the institution provided four separate registration windows and extensions between March and June 2026.

Management noted that 36,391 students completed the process, and warned that further extensions would severely disrupt the academic calendar.

“The initial registration period ran from Saturday, March 14 to Sunday, April 12, 2026,” the statement read. “The deadline was subsequently extended on three occasions by reopening the portal.

This allowed unregistered students to sign up, and others to edit their courses.

“The university did this in recognition of the prevailing economic challenges facing many students and their parents.”

UNILAG maintained that it provided adequate notice through its website, newsletters, and official social media platforms, including WhatsApp.

The university added that hourly reminders were sent out across all communication channels leading up to and during the final registration window.

“As of the close of registration on Sunday, June 21, 2026, a total of 36,391 students had successfully completed their Second Semester course registration,” management stated. “Reopening the registration portal at this stage would disrupt the university’s academic processes… Accordingly, requests for any further reopening of the registration portal cannot be granted.”

Meanwhile, hundreds of affected students including those in final-year have accused the university management of shutting them out while they were still scrambling to raise funds for their obligatory fees.

While the students confirmed that the university extended the deadlines three times before the final closure on June 21, they appealed to the authorities for a final mercy window.

Some of them told Nigerian Tribune that they were not accessing NELFUND loans.

Lamenting their plight, the students expressed dread that their inability to register would bar them from the upcoming examinations, ultimately forcing them to spend an extra year at the university.

Management, however, remains firm, stating it has a responsibility to ensure fairness to all students and maintain institutional regulations.
