CP Ahmed Sanusi
The Commissioner of Police (CP), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ahmed Sanusi, has called for the prompt issuance of court orders and the accelerated prosecution of criminal cases to enhance policing and justice delivery in the nation’s capital.
Sanusi said delays in obtaining judicial authorisations and the prolonged prosecution of criminal matters often impede investigations and contribute to overcrowding in police detention facilities by extending periods of suspect custody.
The police commissioner spoke during a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Hon. Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf, in Abuja.
According to him, effective policing and the administration of justice are inseparable and require sustained collaboration between the Police and the Judiciary.
Sanusi urged the judiciary to continue supporting the police by promptly issuing search warrants, bench warrants and other judicial authorisations necessary for timely investigations, effective law enforcement and successful prosecution of criminal cases.
In a statement issued on Friday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the CP also expressed appreciation for the existing cordial relationship between the FCT Police Command and the High Court, describing it as vital to strengthening the criminal justice system.
Responding, Chief Judge Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf welcomed the police commissioner and expressed confidence in his leadership, describing his appointment as timely.
He said Sanusi’s experience would further strengthen security and improve the administration of justice in the FCT.
The Chief Judge acknowledged the concerns raised by the police commissioner and assured him of the judiciary’s continued institutional support to ensure efficient justice delivery.
He also identified areas requiring closer collaboration between the two institutions and stressed the need to sustain the longstanding partnership between the Judiciary and the Police to promote the rule of law and protect residents’ rights.
The visit ended with an exchange of commemorative gifts and group photographs, underscoring both institutions’ commitment to strengthening criminal justice administration and boosting public confidence in the justice system. (The Nation)
