It was yet another superlative outing by Africvan champions Nigeria as the Super Eagles minutes ago triumphed over boastful hosts, the Wayla Antelopes of Ethiopia, in the first leg final World Cup qualifier decided at the Addis Ababa National Stadium.
Nigeria overcame a scary early minutes on the dry and bumpy pitch and gradually stamped their authority on the game, with a brace from hot shot Emmanuel Emenike killing off the Antelopes.
It was however the hosts who drew the first blood through Behailu Assefa in the 56th minute. Their joy was soon cut short y Emenike, who struck in the 67th minute to draw the Eagles level.
When it seemed as if the match would end one goal apiece, Emenike waltzed his way into the 18-yard box but was puled down. The centre referee did not hesitate to point to the penalty spot. Dusting himself up, Emenike, the 2013 Afica Cup of Nations highest goal scorer, stabbed home the decider after sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
Nigeria is now just a match away from landing in Brazil – the return leg billed for the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar on November 16.
