Year 2026 Erasmus Mundus scholars in Abuja Photo: EU delegation to Nigeria
Nigeria has reaffirmed its position as Africa’s leading beneficiary of the European Union’s prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s scholarship programme, with 163 Nigerian students admitted this year and 89 of them winning fully funded scholarships to pursue postgraduate studies across Europe’s leading universities.
The landmark achievement was announced by the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Gautier Mignot, at the 2026 Erasmus Mundus Pre-Departure Orientation held in Abuja, where scholarship recipients, prospective applicants, education stakeholders and government representatives gathered ahead of the scholars’ departure to Europe.
The latest figures not only place Nigeria at the top in Africa but also rank the country among the top five beneficiaries globally, alongside Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and the United States.
“This year we have about 163 Nigerian students admitted into these master’s programmes. This places Nigeria again, like in 2024, as the top country in Africa and among the top five globally, together with Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and the United States,” Ambassador Mignot announced.
The EU envoy disclosed that 89 Nigerians secured the highly competitive Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s scholarships this year, an increase from 81 scholarship recipients in 2025, while the programme is steadily approaching a historic milestone of 1,000 Nigerian beneficiaries since the country began participating in 2014.
“We have 89 scholarship awardees this year, up from 81 in 2025,” he said.
The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme offers fully funded postgraduate education, allowing students to study for between 12 and 24 months in at least two universities located in two Erasmus+ participating countries before earning joint, double or multiple degrees awarded by a consortium of leading European universities.
Ambassador Mignot described Erasmus as one of the European Union’s most successful education initiatives, saying it represents the bloc’s enduring commitment to investing in young Nigerians through merit-based access to world-class higher education.
“It demonstrates the readiness of the EU to offer regular migration opportunities for young Nigerians to travel and study in Europe, based on their merit, capacity and abilities.
“It is indeed the concrete commitment of the EU to creating opportunities for Nigerian youth,” he said.
He noted that the EU is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Nigerian universities to improve the country’s global educational competitiveness.
“We want Nigeria to get higher in the world ranking, to begin with in the top three. We will work for that together with the Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission and Nigerian universities, and I’m sure we’ll get there,” the Ambassador stated.
Beyond academic excellence, Ambassador Mignot challenged the scholars to recognise the enormous responsibility that comes with the scholarship, reminding them that they represent millions of Nigerian youths who aspire to similar opportunities.
Describing Erasmus as a life-changing experience that exposes students to diverse cultures, international friendships and global networks, he urged the beneficiaries to uphold Nigeria’s image while abroad.
“You will be the ambassadors of Nigeria across Europe. And once you are back, we expect you to become true ambassadors of Europe in Nigeria,” he said.
Representing the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, Dr Chinelo Nwosu, Director of the Directorate of Students, applauded the European Union for its sustained investment in Nigeria’s human capital development.
She urged the scholars to maximise the opportunity by acquiring world-class knowledge and returning home to contribute to national development. ‘Go to school, come back and continue to develop Nigeria,” she advised.
“Be good ambassadors of Nigeria wherever you are. Work hard, stay focused, keep out of trouble and remember where you are coming from,” she added.
Also speaking, Mrs Liman K.A.A., Director of the Department of Scholarship Awards, representing the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, described the orientation as more than a ceremonial send-off.
According to her, it symbolises excellence, opportunity and the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the European Union in advancing education, research, innovation and human development.
She commended the European Union, its Member States, participating universities and partners for transforming the lives of thousands of Nigerian youths through sustained investment in education.
“Your conduct, character and academic performance will shape perceptions of Nigeria and inspire future generations of scholars,” she said.
“Be diligent in your studies, respectful of the different cultures you will encounter, and open to new ideas and perspectives.”
One of this year’s scholarship recipients, Oluchi Yulis Myron, who will study Cultural Management, described the award as an opportunity to acquire global expertise while experiencing different cultures.
“I wanted an opportunity not just to study abroad, but also to experience different cultures,” she said.
“One of the most exciting aspects of Erasmus Mundus is the mobility. You get to travel, meet new people, experience different cultures and even learn new languages.”
Reflecting on what made her application successful, she said her motivation letter clearly demonstrated the link between her academic background, professional experience and future aspirations.
“My motivation letter allowed me to communicate my passion, my experiences and my vision for the future. I think that was what made my application stand out.”
Oluchi expressed excitement about learning from museums, heritage institutions and cultural experts across Europe.
“I’m looking forward to understanding global best practices in heritage preservation and exploring how those ideas can be adapted to strengthen cultural preservation in Nigeria.”
She disclosed that after completing the programme, she hopes to pursue a PhD before returning home to establish a business focused on cultural management and heritage preservation.
The event concluded with Ambassador Mignot expressing appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, the National Board for Technical Education, the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, EU Member States and other partners for their collaboration in expanding educational opportunities for Nigerians.
“Nigerians are among the best students in the world and European universities are keen to welcome them,” he said. (Sunday Tribune)
