Armed herders
A violent clash has reportedly erupted in Gwomu community, Bikwin Ward of Karim Lamido local government council of Taraba state, involving suspected herders and local residents, leaving at least three people dead and widespread destruction across several villages.
According to local accounts, the incident escalated on Thursday and resulted in the burning of three villages, forcing hundreds of residents to flee their homes. Many of the displaced persons are now taking refuge in neighbouring communities including Bambuka, Dadiya, Loh, and Panya.
The affected settlements have been identified as Bobbo, Weyam, and Bakau, all located within the Gwomu Bayan Dutse axis of the local government area.
Residents of the area alleged that there was no visible security presence from the onset of the violence through the following morning, raising concerns over delayed response and the safety of vulnerable communities.
The clash has left many families homeless, with properties and livelihoods reportedly destroyed in the affected villages, deepening humanitarian concerns in the region.
Reacting to the incident, the member representing Karim Lamido, Ardo-Kola, and Lau Federal Constituency, Audu Mohammed Lauya, condemned the violence, describing it as “deeply saddening.” He extended condolences to families who lost loved ones and expressed sympathy to those displaced or affected, stressing that no community deserves such devastation.
Lauya called on security agencies to urgently restore order in the affected areas, apprehend those responsible, and ensure justice is served. He also urged relevant authorities to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to displaced families and other victims of the attack.
The lawmaker further appealed for calm among residents of Karim Lamido, warning against retaliatory actions and urging continued peaceful coexistence. He emphasized that ongoing violence would only worsen hardship in the region, while dialogue and cooperation remain critical to achieving lasting peace.
Reaffirming his commitment to his constituency, Lauya pledged to work closely with the Taraba State Government, security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at restoring stability across affected communities. (The Guardian)
