Gov Diri
The Bayelsa chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Gov Douye Diri to make the fight against hunger, poverty and economic hardship the top priority of his administration in the second half of 2026.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by its State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ikaebimo Mark, the party said rising living costs and declining purchasing power have left many Bayelsa people struggling to meet basic needs.
The PDP argued that despite improved derivation revenue and increased federal allocations to the state, the welfare of many residents has continued to deteriorate.
It said hunger and poverty have become widespread across communities, stressing that the welfare of citizens should remain the primary responsibility of any government.
The opposition party called on the state government to implement programmes that would create jobs, stimulate economic activities and support small and medium-scale enterprises.
It also urged greater investment in youth and women empowerment initiatives to improve the overall standard of living in the state.
The PDP expressed concern that several Memoranda of Understanding announced by the present administration had yet to translate into meaningful local or foreign investments.
According to the party, the government should move beyond signing agreements and ensure such partnerships deliver measurable economic benefits through industrial growth and employment opportunities.
The PDP maintained that although the administration came into office with a prosperity agenda mantra, many residents now face unemployment, hardship and worsening economic conditions.
It urged the government to strengthen institutions, invest in labour-intensive industries and develop a comprehensive wealth creation and employment blueprint.
The PDP said the administration should refocus its policies to become more people-centred and responsive to prevailing socio-economic challenges.
It reaffirmed its readiness to support genuine efforts aimed at tackling hardship and pledged to offer constructive policy ideas in the interest of the state.
The party, however, alleged that the APC-led administration had failed to provide the innovative policies required to address Bayelsa’s growing economic challenges.
The PDP also encouraged residents not to lose hope as the second half of the year begins, expressing confidence that better days lie ahead.
It reaffirmed its commitment to providing purposeful, compassionate and people-oriented leadership, insisting that Bayelsa can achieve a brighter future.
