Legislative Arm of the Warri South Local Government Council in Delta State has passed a resolution recognising the Itsekiri and Urhobo as the indigenous communities and tribes of the local government area.
The resolution was adopted during the council’s plenary session held on June 30, 2026, following what lawmakers described as extensive deliberations on the issue.
The legislators, in a letter addressed to the Chairman of Warri South Local Government Council and signed by the Clerk, Affor Maku, stated that the recognition would serve as the basis for legislative representation, political delineation, administrative planning and official engagements within the local government.
The resolution reads In part: “The House unanimously resolved that the indigenous communities and tribes recognised by the Council are the Itsekiri and the Urhobo. This is for the purpose of legislative representation, political delineation, administrative planning and official engagement in Warri South Local Government Area.”
The lawmakers further resolved that all matters relating to the administration of the local government should be guided by the provisions of the resolution, subject to the Constitution and other extant laws. (Vanguard)
