The Democratic Integrity Forum (DIF) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of compromising its neutrality during the recent off-cycle governorship election in Ekiti State, warning that the alleged irregularities could undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections if not addressed.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Barr. Godwin Omini, the group alleged that some INEC officials colluded with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the handling of uncollected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
According to the group, about 400,000 uncollected PVCs were allegedly diverted and distributed in a manner that compromised the integrity of the electoral process and disenfranchised legitimate voters in the state.
The group also expressed concern over comments reportedly made by APC chieftain Lere Olayinka regarding an aspirant of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), alleging that the remarks suggested that sensitive voter information may have been accessed through individuals within INEC.
It argued that any unauthorised access to voter registers, polling unit information, biometric records, or other sensitive electoral data by political actors would undermine the confidentiality and credibility of the electoral process.
The Democratic Integrity Forum said the alleged incidents reflected deeper institutional weaknesses that could threaten the conduct of the 2027 general elections if left unresolved.
The group called on INEC to carry out an independent audit of access to voter data and the distribution of uncollected PVCs in Ekiti State, urging the electoral commission to investigate the allegations thoroughly and sanction any officials found culpable.
It also urged the commission to strengthen its data protection systems, improve internal oversight mechanisms, and implement reforms aimed at restoring public confidence in the electoral process.
The forum further called on civil society organisations, the media, development partners, and the international community to closely monitor Nigeria’s electoral process and support reforms that would enhance the credibility, transparency, and independence of the country’s electoral system.
“The credibility of the 2027 general elections will depend largely on the confidence Nigerians have in the independence and neutrality of INEC,” the statement said.
As of the time of filing this report, the Independent National Electoral Commission had not responded to the allegations. (Guardian)
