Efforts to expand access to higher education in Nigeria have received a boost as King’s College London, through the Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education, opened applications for a fully funded Foundation Certificate in Applied Health.
This was contained in a statement issued at the weekend by the Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education at King’s College London
According to the Centre, the scholarship programme is designed to provide a pathway into university education for talented young Nigerians who have completed secondary school but have not secured admission into higher institutions.
The statement noted that “successful applicants will study tuition-free for one year under the online programme, which is scheduled to commence on September 14, 2026.
“Applications close on June 25, 2026, while the programme is open to Nigerian students with WAEC or NECO grades of C6 and above in relevant subjects.”
“The Foundation Certificate will be delivered entirely online and is designed for mobile devices with low data consumption, making it accessible to students across the country.
“Participants will study eight core modules, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Data Analysis, English for Scientific and Academic Purposes, Applied Critical Thinking and Applied Health Sciences,” the statement read.
The organisers said the initiative aims to remove barriers created by financial constraints, location and personal circumstances that often limit access to university education.
According to the Centre, applicants facing financial hardship, displacement or significant caregiving responsibilities are particularly encouraged to apply, with selection based on academic potential and community engagement.
The programme also includes digital skills, employability and entrepreneurship support, alongside a capstone project focused on solving a health challenge within participants’ communities.
King’s College London described the initiative (https://www.kcl.ac.uk/global/about-the-afe-babalola-centre) as an opportunity to extend quality education across Africa, noting that graduates will be positioned for undergraduate studies, diploma programmes, health-related careers and further professional training.
