Okada accident scene for illustration use only
Two female students sitting the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination⁶ (WASSCE) and a commercial motorcyclist were killed on Wednesday in a road accident along Choba Bridge on the East–West Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The victims were said to be returning from their examination centre when the motorcycles conveying the students reportedly ran into a moving truck.
According to eyewitness accounts, the students had just finished their WAEC examinations at Odoha Community Secondary School in Emohua Local Government Area and were on their way home when the crash occurred.
“The students were coming back from Odoha Community Secondary School, Emohua LGA of Rivers after writing the WAEC exams,” a source said.
“It happened today. Three people died: one okada rider and two WAEC female students.”
Another witness said the exam centre was located about 30 minutes from the accident scene near Choba Bridge, a busy route in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, which hosts the University of Port Harcourt.
“Choba is the host community to the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT),” the source added.
Several other passengers were reportedly injured in the crash and were rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Operatives of the Choba Divisional Police Headquarters were deployed to the scene to restore order and manage traffic in the area.
A video shared on X showed the victims lying on the road after the collision.
As of press time, the Rivers State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had not issued an official statement on the incident. (The Guardian)
