Released Okuama leaders
The Niger Delta Youth For Good Governance (NDYFGG) has commended the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State.
Delivering his ruling on Wednesday, Hon. Justice Hyeladzira Nganjiwa ordered the unconditional release of Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo and other detained leaders of Okuama community, Ughelli South LGA, Delta State. The court also fixed 13th July, 2026, for continuation of hearing on the substantive matter. The order followed a motion for release under fundamental rights enforcement rules filed by the applicants on 4th May, 2026.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NDYFGG through its National President and First Elected Pioneer National President of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Scholarship Students Worldwide, Comr. Lucky O.O. Ukueku, expressed appreciation to the Federal High Court, and particularly to Hon. Justice Nganjiwa, for restoring public confidence in the judiciary at a time when justice seemed delayed.
Comr. Ukueku appealed to the Nigerian Army and all security agencies to respect and comply with the court order in line with Section 287 of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates that all authorities and persons must obey court judgments. “The rule of law remains the foundation of any democratic society. When institutions obey court orders, public trust is strengthened,” he stated.
He called on Mr. President, the Governor of Delta State, Delta State leaders, and all relevant stakeholders in the Niger Delta to intervene constructively to ensure the full implementation of the court’s decision and the safe release of the community leaders, including Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo of Delta State University, Abraka. “Swift compliance will promote peace, unity, and confidence in governance across the Niger Delta,” Comr. Ukueku said.
While condemning any act of violence against security personnel, Comr. Ukueku emphasized that justice must be pursued through lawful channels. “The law provides a clear path. Detention beyond what the court permits undermines that path. We urge all parties to allow due process to run its full course,” he added.
Comr. Ukueku concluded by urging all levels of government to prioritize dialogue, human rights, and the rule of law in handling community matters. “Leadership is tested most when difficult decisions are required. Let this moment be one where institutions choose the constitution over delay,” he said.
