The Senate has condemned in totality the abhorrent acts of lynching which resulted in the death of a seven-year-old child recently in Lagos and urged the Nigerian Police Force to fish out the perpetrators.

This followed a motion sponsored on the Red Chambers by lawmaker representing Lagos East, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, titled “The Motion on Condemning the rising cases of Jungle Justice in the Country” which was co-sponsored by Senate Leader Ali Ndume.

Leading the debate, Ashafa admitted that he is distressed by the rising cases of Jungle Justice by mobs in the country, especially with the recent lynching of a seven-year-old boy in Orile, Lagos, murdered for attempting to steal a cup of garri.

He also reminded his colleagues of the death of four persons in Aluu Killings as well as recent killing examples in Uyo, Benin City and Akure.

According to Ashafa, “I am disgusted at the growing culture of extreme hate and disregard for human life and institutional lethargy.” He observed that the Section 33 of the Nigerian Constitution guarantees the right to life, and that no Nigerian life must be taken extra-judicially.

Senate, Leader Ali Ndume, while adding his voice on the motion, pointed out that many Nigerians can no longer move freely due to fear of mob actions.

Senator Mao Ohuabunwa representing Abia North, in his contribution, noted that the level of hunger and anger in the country is very high and that government needs to wake up.
