The Labour Party has rescheduled all its primary elections to May 30, citing the 2026 Eid el-Kabir celebration and activities marking the third anniversary of elected public office holders across the country.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, the Labour Party said the 2027 governorship and state assembly primaries earlier fixed for May 27 had been moved alongside the presidential and national assembly primaries.
According to the statement, all the party’s primaries will now be conducted simultaneously across the country on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
“Consequently, all primaries for the offices of president, governor, senate, house of representatives, and state houses of assembly will now hold simultaneously on Saturday, 30th May 2026,” the statement read.
The party explained that the adjustment became necessary because the previously scheduled dates coincided with major national and religious events.
It noted that May 27 falls within the period of the 2026 Eid el-Kabir celebration, while May 29 marks the third anniversary of the inauguration of current elected public office holders.
According to the party, the decision was taken to allow members, aspirants, supporters, and Nigerians generally to fully participate in the celebrations and observances.
“In consideration of the spiritual significance of the Sallah celebration and the national importance of the 29th May anniversary, the Labour Party, as a people-oriented and responsive political party, deemed it appropriate to adjust its schedule in order to enable members, aspirants, supporters, and Nigerians generally to fully observe these important occasions,” the statement added.
The Labour Party also apologised to aspirants, stakeholders, supporters, and members of the public for any inconvenience the rescheduling may cause. (The Nation)
