Veteran Nollywood actor Roy De Nani has opened up on his struggles, revealing how he was banned from the industry for 13 years and lost two children to sickle cell during that period.
He disclosed during an interview on the Where Is The Lie podcast.
Recounting his experience, the actor said a directive was issued barring filmmakers from offering him roles.
“The man gave law. Nobody should give Roy De Nani job again. From then, it lasted for 13 years. Even the one I was recording, the producer came in and stopped it,” he said.
He added that the period was marked by deep personal loss and isolation.
“I had a brother from the same father, this man died, no single actor showed up. I lost my son, lost my daughter because they were SS. We needed blood transfusion so that they would continue, but there was no money, and they died,” he said.
When asked if Nollywood supported him during his lowest moments, he replied, “Nowhere. They never came. They have not been touched, let me put it that way.”
Despite the challenges, De Nani said he is still active creatively and continues to write scripts.
“I write scripts, fantastic scripts. I’ve written. I am looking for someone to type it for me. I don’t have the money to go and type,” he said.
However, he noted that he finds it difficult to ask for help.
“I know that everyone is suffering from one thing or the other, so telling them my own is just being selfish the way I look at it. I am someone who goes for the cheapest thing whenever I tell you I need something. I am a shy person,” he added. (TRIBUNE)
