President Trump
United States President, Donald Trump, has revealed that his late mother, Mary MacLeod, once admired King Charles, recalling how she described the monarch as “cute” during his younger years.
Trump made the remark while hosting King Charles and Queen Camilla at the White House as part of their ongoing visit to the United States, using the moment to reflect on his mother’s long-standing fascination with the British Royal Family.
He said: “I remember her saying very clearly ‘Charles, look young Charles he is so cute’.”
He jokingly added: “My mother had a crush on Charles – can you believe it?”
The president then gestured upward, adding: “I wonder what she is thinking right now”.
Trump went on to speak about his mother’s Scottish roots and early life before moving to America.
He added: “My wonderful mother Mary MacLeod, was born in Stornoway, Scotland, the Hebrides. And that is what they call very serious Scotland there is no question about it.
“Some places they say ‘was it really Scotland?’ Well the Hebrides that is real serious Scotland, that is where they had the greatest of warriors.
“She came to America at 19, met my incredible father – we loved him so much – Fred, and they were married for 63 years.”
During the event, Trump also highlighted how deeply his mother admired the Royal Family, noting her attachment to royal ceremonies and appearances.
He said: “I told the King that she [Donald Trump’s mother] loved the Royal Family and she loved the Queen.
“And any time the Queen was involved in a ceremony or anything, my mother would be glued to the television and she would say ‘look Donald, look how beautiful that is’.”
Mary Anne MacLeod was born in 1912 in Tong, a village near Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland.
Like many Scots at the time, she emigrated in search of better opportunities, leaving for the United States as a teenager to work as a domestic servant.
She later married Frederick Trump, a successful property developer from a family of German immigrants. Their union lasted more than six decades and produced five children, with Donald Trump as the fourth. (Nigerian Tribune)
