This year marks the third consecutive tournament without Italy, one of the sport’s most decorated nations.
Alongside Italy, Denmark, Poland, Nigeria, and Cameroon will also be absent, leaving fans shocked and the tournament dynamics dramatically altered.
The 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, with the final scheduled at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Here are the five biggest countries that will be missing out on the 2026 World Cup.
Italy
Despite four World Cup titles and a UEFA EURO 2021 victory, Italy will miss the World Cup for the third straight edition. The Azzurri’s final qualifying match against Bosnia and Herzegovina ended in a penalty shootout defeat.
Denmark
Denmark’s elimination is one of Europe’s biggest surprises. The Danes, fresh off a Euro semifinal run, fell to Czechia in a playoff final that ended 2–2 after extra time. Denmark lost in the penalty shootout, missing their chance to return to the World Cup stage.
Nigeria
The Super Eagles of Nigeria were Africa’s most notable absence. Nigeria failed to qualify after losing to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the CAF playoff final on penalties. Ranked 26th in FIFA’s latest rankings, Nigeria misses its second consecutive World Cup after missing Qatar 2022.
For a nation in a “golden age” of talent, failing to showcase these stars on the 48-team stage is being viewed as a national sporting disaster.
Poland
For Robert Lewandowski, the 2026 World Cup represented a final chance to appear on football’s biggest stage. Poland’s hopes were dashed after a 3–2 defeat to Sweden in their last qualifier. Following the loss, Lewandowski bid farewell to international football on Instagram, closing one of Poland’s most storied careers.
Cameroon
Cameroon’s qualification hopes unravelled early in Group D. Cape Verde’s dominance left the Indomitable Lions chasing shadows.
Cameroon finished second in their group with 15 points, trailing Cape Verde’s 19.
The absence of these five footballing powerhouses, Italy, Denmark, Nigeria, Poland, and Cameroon, reshapes the 2026 World Cup landscape. Fans will watch the tournament without some of the game’s biggest names, while emerging nations and teams seek to capitalise on the open field. (BusinessDay)
