The Plateau State Chapter of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has described the attacks on Anguwan Rukuba community of Jos North local government area of the state as barbaric and senseless, calling on government and relevant authorities to investigate those behind the incident.
Eyewitnesses on Sunday said the attackers, who rode on motorcycles, invaded the community around 7:30 pm, while people were going about their normal businesses, and started shooting indiscriminately, causing panic among residents.
Plateau state police command has confirmed that 14 persons, including two women were killed, but the National President of Berom Youth Moulder Association (BYM), Barrister Solomon Dalyop, claimed 27 persons were killed.
JNI, in a statement signed by its secretary, Dr. Salim Musa Umar, expressed deep shock and sorrow over the tragic incident, which resulted in the loss of many innocent lives, strongly condemning the attack.
It described the attack as barbaric, senseless, saying it is a grave threat to peace and coexistence in Plateau State.
The statement said, “We are deeply pained by the magnitude of this tragedy. The sanctity of human life must never be violated under any circumstance. This act of violence is unacceptable and must be condemned by all.”
Dr Salim further extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased, while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
The organization appealed to residents across the state to remain calm and law-abiding, warning against any form of retaliation that could further inflame tensions.
JNI stated, “At this critical moment, we urge all citizens to exercise restraint. We must not allow anger and grief to push us into actions that could worsen the situation.”
It also called on security agencies to immediately launch a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation into the incident, with a view to identifying and prosecuting those responsible.
It added, “It is imperative that the security agencies leave no stone unturned in uncovering the circumstances surrounding this attack. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done to restore public confidence and prevent future occurrences.”The group further urged the government, community leaders and religious stakeholders to intensify efforts toward peacebuilding, dialogue and reconciliation across affected communities.
JNI reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence, unity and justice in Plateau State and Nigeria at large. (Daily Trust)
