Gov Bassey Otu of Cross River State
Governor Bassey Otu has directed the immediate provision of free medical treatment for victims of the recent gas explosion in Calabar, as the Cross River State government intensifies efforts to manage the aftermath of the incident and support the affected residents.
The governor described the incident as tragic, expressing concern over the extent of damage to lives and property.
Many residents were reportedly injured, while homes and businesses were destroyed in the blast.
Otu raised concerns over the siting of gas and fuel facilities within residential neighbourhoods, stressing the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent future occurrences.
He assured that the government will act swiftly to assist victims, particularly those currently receiving treatment in various hospitals.
He pledged that in addition to free medical care, the state government will consider compensation for individuals and families who suffered losses as a result of the explosion.
“We will ensure that all those affected receive the necessary medical attention at no cost. We will also look into compensation to support victims in rebuilding their lives,” the governor said.
One of the victims, Mrs. Rosa Asuquo, recounted the confusion that followed the explosion and called for improvements in emergency response systems.
She alleged that efforts to reach the fire service at the time of the incident were unsuccessful, leaving residents to contend with the situation unaided.
Asuquo said that by the time she arrived at the scene, significant damage had already occurred, with properties destroyed and many people injured.
She urged the government to not only assist victims but also strengthen emergency response mechanisms to avert similar delays in the future. (Nigerian Tribune)
