The Delta State Government has directed the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to track down perpetrators involved in the harassment and alleged rape of women during the recent Ozoro Festival in Isoko North Local Government Area.
The government described the incident as barbaric and unacceptable, stressing that no individual or group should exploit cultural celebrations as a cover for criminal acts.
State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, made this known in a statement issued on Friday, expressing deep concern over reports of women being harassed and, in some cases, sexually assaulted during the festival.
“The Delta State Government strongly condemns the harassment of ladies and the reported cases of rape during the Ozoro Festival. Such barbaric acts are totally unacceptable and have no place in our society,” he stated.
Aniagwu emphasised that the government would not tolerate any act that violates the dignity and rights of women, noting that cultural festivities must never be used to perpetrate criminality.
He called on the police to urgently investigate the incidents and ensure that those responsible are identified, apprehended, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The commissioner further assured residents of the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and rights of all citizens, particularly women and other vulnerable groups.
He also urged community leaders and festival organisers across the state to implement adequate security measures to safeguard participants and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
Reiterating its zero tolerance for gender-based violence, the state government warned that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law. (TRIBUNE)
