The pupils with the gifts
By PAMELA EBOH, Awka
Pupils of Ogwumabiri Primary School, Lilu in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, have received gifts ranging from exercise books, school bags from the Nigerian Army.
The gesture is part of the army's Civic-Military Relations (CMR) activities geared towards giving the pupils a sense of belonging, inspiring them to pursue academic excellence, and fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie between the army and the host community.
Presenting the items on behalf of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Brigadier General S.A. Jimoh said: "The gesture is to encourage the children academically while deepening the bond between the military and the community.
"This is an act motivated by the Army’s belief that education is a lasting legacy and a vital tool for social engineering, economic well-being, and overall development.
"I encourage the staff and pupils of the school to make good use of the materials to improve their academic performance.”
He further assured the community that the Nigerian Army remains committed to providing maximum security—not only for the pupils but also for the entire community and the state at large.
Speaking to newsmen, the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, emphasised that children represent the future of any society.
According to him, there can be no lasting peace without development, adding that such underscores the Army’s decision to invest in the education of the younger generation as future leaders.
While noting that peace is gradually returning to the community, he encouraged those who had fled due to insecurity to return to their homes.
Responding, the headteacher of the school, Mrs. Grace Nnubia, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Army for the kind gesture and pledged to maintain high academic standards in line with the values associated with the Army.
The community also expressed gratitude, noting that the Army’s presence has revived social interaction and activities in what was previously a deserted area.
The event was marked by celebration among the people of Lilu community, particularly the management, teachers, and pupils of Ogwumabiri Primary School.
Officers present at the event include Colonel Madaki Yakubu, Commander of the 302 Artillery Regiment (General Support), Onitsha, along with other senior officers from the 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Enugu State.
