A group, the National Coalition Against Mass Killings and Impunity (NCAMKI) has expressed grave concern over the continuing pattern of mass killings, terrorist attacks, banditry, and violent assaults on communities in Nigeria.
The group noted that no nation should become accustomed to the routine loss of innocent lives, saying that across many parts of our country, communities continue to experience devastating attacks that leave families shattered, villages displaced, and survivors abandoned without justice or adequate protection.
NCAMKI particularly commiserates with the people of Ngoshe and the surrounding communities in Gwoza Local Council of Borno State, following the recent attacks reportedly carried out by elements linked to Boko Haram.
According to the group, the scale of the violence, including reported killings and the abduction of women and children, underscores once again the grave security challenges confronting vulnerable communities, particularly in border areas near the Mandara Hills region.
It also noted reports of related attacks in Pulka, another border community in the same axis, stressing that these repeated assaults demonstrate a troubling pattern of insecurity that must not be ignored.
NCAMKI, in a statement signed by its Deputy Coordinator and General Secretary, Tunde Solomon Agunbiade, recognises that many Nigerians are increasingly frustrated and angry about the persistence of these attacks and the apparent absence of accountability for perpetrators.
“When violence occurs repeatedly without arrests, prosecutions, or justice for victims, it inevitably fuels suspicion, distrust, and public anxiety.
“There are clearly serious security failures and gaps that require urgent attention. The persistent failure to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for attacks has entrenched a dangerous culture of impunity that emboldens violent actors.
“There are also credible concerns about the role of criminal informants, local collaborators, and networks that may be enabling these attacks. These issues must be thoroughly investigated by competent authorities.
“At the same time, allegations of official complicity in violence must be addressed through a credible, transparent, and independent investigation. Justice must be guided by facts and law, not speculation,” the statement added.
Noting that the situation is unacceptable and must not be allowed to continue, NCAMKI called for an immediate and strengthened protection for vulnerable communities across conflict-affected regions. It also urged decisive security operations to dismantle terrorist and bandit networks threatening civilian populations and independent and transparent investigations into major attacks, including the recent incidents in Borno State.
The group further called for the prompt arrest, prosecution, and punishment of perpetrators, collaborators, sponsors, and beneficiaries of violent attacks, adequate humanitarian support, rehabilitation, and resettlement for affected communities and displaced persons and strengthening of intelligence gathering, early-warning systems, and community-based security mechanisms to prevent further attacks.
While emphasising the importance of accountability of all security and public officials responsible for protecting lives and property, it noted that Nigeria could not normalise mass killings.
“A nation that fails to protect its citizens undermines the very foundation of its social contract.
“The people of Nigeria deserve safety, justice, and the assurance that their lives matter,” the statement stated.
NCAMKI stands in solidarity with every grieving family, every survivor, and every community threatened by violence. (Guardian)
